James Cameron created the ultimate sci-fi franchise in the year 1984 when he released The Terminator starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. However, the series has seen various ups and downs since its first release. For example, Terminator Genisys didn’t do as well as its predecessors. In fact, it did the lowest amount of business at the box office compared to any other film of the series. Let’s take a look at the history of this franchise and go over its movies once again.

Terminator Genisys. EXPIRES IN 108 DAYS. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J.K. Kyle Reese arrives in a 1984 where the timeline has been altered, and Sarah Connor is a skilled fighter with a reprogrammed Terminator determined to stop Skynet before it launches Judgment Day. Terminator: Genisys had many unacknowledged screenwriters, and the acknowledged two screenwriters, Laeta Kalogriois and Patrick Lussier deservedly share the praise with them for tying up and rewriting decades of plot twists from this franchise. The Terminator (1984)

Although the original Terminator movie might seem slightly outdated these days, its story continues to inspire awe in everyone. Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor and Michael Biehn’s Kyle Reese continue to be the definitive version of the original characters even after 30 years. The war-torn future that Cameron predicted at that time is darkly and chillingly relevant today.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Anyone who thought that CGI wasn’t effective was proven wrong by this sequel of the original Terminator film. James Cameron flipped the narrative of the first film and created an even more amazing time-travel adventure that led to the creation of the most memorable villains ever created in Hollywood, in the form of a liquid metal T-1000 – played by Robert Patrick. The movie was endlessly imaginative and thought-provoking at the same time, becoming one of the best sci-fi action movies of the modern times.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)

Every movie franchise reaches a point where it descends down into the region of mediocrity. Terminator 3, directed by Jonathan Mostow, who took on the bold task of succeeding James Cameron, didn’t do as well at the box office as its earlier two predecessors. The rise of the Machines depended very heavily on the tongue-in-cheek humor, with Kristanna Loken playing the T-800’s opponent. The film did a fairly good job at closing the pre-apocalypse trilogy, featuring a haunting finale that suggested John Connor becoming the inevitable leader of humanity.

Terminator Salvation (2009)

The only Terminator movie that didn’t have Arnold Schwarzenegger in it, as he was serving as California’s Governor during its production, Salvation was the first movie to focus on the post-apocalyptic battle between the machines and the humanity. The film tried very hard to take the series into an unexplored region, but it veered away from the time-travel appeal that the original series had. Despite starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Christian Bale, people only remember this film for Christian Bale’s on-set rant.

Terminator Genisys (2015)

Another vain attempt at bringing the franchise back to life, this Terminator movie attempted at taking things all the way back to the initial stages, creating a sort of an alternate timeline, sending Kyle Reese back to 1984 for saving Sarah Connor (played by Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones’ fame).

TERMINATOR GENISYS (12A) Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jai Courtney, Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke, Byung-hun Lee, JK Simmons, Courtney B Vance, Dayo Okeniyi Director: Alan Taylor Duration: 126 mins IN Terminator Genisys, the misfiring reboot of James Cameron's apocalyptic time-travelling saga, Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg assassin repeatedly references his advancing years in a dystopian world of young pretenders.

'I'm old, not obsolete,' he deadpans in that Teutonic growl.

Alas, both the hulking Austrian action man and the blockbusting franchise are ready for the scrapheap.

Millions of dollars of special effects, some of them workmanlike, cannot disguise the fried circuitry of Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier's script, which is hard-wired with the muddled concept of alternate universes to explain the tweaks to this reimagined origin story.

Released in 1984, The Terminator explored a bleak future in which machines have rebelled against mankind and rendered our species almost obsolete.

Terminator Genisys follows a similarly gloomy trajectory. Rebel leader John Connor (Jason Clarke) leads the charge in 2029 Los Angeles, flanked by best friend Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney).

'You gave us all a future, John. I'm going to use mine,' proudly declares Kyle, who volunteers to venture back to 1984 to protect John's mother Sarah (Emilia Clarke) from a shape-shifting T-1000.

Arnie T-800 When Kyle arrives, he discovers that he has gatecrashed an altered timeline in which the Connor matriarch is a ballsy warrior, who already has a protector: an ageing T-800 (Schwarzenegger). They launch an assault on Cyberdyne Systems run by Miles Dyson and his son Danny who will unwittingly give birth to Skynet and bring about mankind's downfall. However, someone knows they are coming.

Alan Taylor's multiple timelines become a tangled, knotty mess before the two hours are up, making us wish that Skynet had infected the scriptwriters' computers with a virus and wiped this film from their hard drives.

The end - including an additional scene secreted in the credits - can't come soon enough.
